Pilot Dead as Indian Fighter Jet Crashes in Dubai Airshow
“An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident,” the IAF said.
Expressing profound sorrow, the statement added that the IAF “stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.”
The military force confirmed it will “ascertain the cause of the accident,” signaling a formal investigation is underway.
Earlier, videos circulating on social media captured the single-seat jet plummeting to the ground amid thick smoke during the aerial display.
NDTV reported that the crash took place at approximately 2:10 p.m. local time (1210 GMT) at Al Maktoum International Airport, with dense smoke quickly engulfing the area.
The Tejas aircraft, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, has now been involved in its second crash in under two years, media noted. Last March, a Tejas fighter crashed in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. That incident was “the first such accident in the aircraft's 23-year history since its maiden test flight in 2001,” and the pilot ejected safely.
