Azerbaijan, UAE Agree on Defense Cooperation During Presidential Visit

(MENAFN) Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates formalized a letter of intent on defense cooperation on Monday during a working visit by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Abu Dhabi.

The agreement was signed as Aliyev met with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during which both leaders praised the growing partnership between their countries.

In addition to the defense cooperation document, the two sides also signed an agreement concerning the sale of part of Azerbaijan’s non-controlling stake in Southern Gas Corridor CJSC to XRG, the international investment arm of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

“During the conversation (between Aliyev and Al Nahyan), they emphasized that Azerbaijan-UAE bilateral relations are based on a strategic partnership,” the statement said, noting that the leaders also discussed prospects for future relations and contacts.

The talks highlighted the significance of reciprocal presidential visits in strengthening bilateral ties and addressed the ongoing Peace Shield-2026 joint military exercise, taking place in the UAE on February 2-3. “They expressed confidence that such exercises contribute to the development of operational military interoperability between the two countries' armed forces, and underscored the importance of continuing them in the future,” the statement added.

Both presidents expressed optimism that the signed documents will further enhance cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UAE. The discussions also included the possibility of establishing twinning relations between Baku and Abu Dhabi.
