Ukraine Expects Prisoner Exchange Soon Amid Trilateral Talks in Abu Dhabi
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was briefed on the latest developments by Ukraine’s negotiation team following the trilateral meeting held in the United Arab Emirates, adding that separate consultations also took place between Ukrainian and American representatives.
In a video message released Wednesday night, Zelenskyy outlined the progress made so far, stating: “We discussed the interim results of the negotiations for today. They will continue tomorrow (Thursday). There will also be a significant step: we expect a POW (prisoners of war) exchange in the near future. Captives must be brought home,” though he did not provide additional specifics.
The most recent prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine occurred on Oct. 2, 2025, following agreements reached during talks in Istanbul, which previously hosted three rounds of direct negotiations earlier that year.
Zelenskyy’s remarks coincided with the launch of a second phase of trilateral discussions in the Emirati capital on Wednesday, with talks scheduled to carry on into Thursday. Earlier consultations were held on Jan. 23 and 24 in the same location, involving delegations from both countries along with US participation.
According to reports, Kyiv and Washington characterized the initial round of dialogue as “constructive," while Moscow indicated that interactions had begun in a constructive way, noting that "significant work ahead."
