Indian PM Denounces Attacks on UAE

(MENAFN) Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday condemned attacks on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and offered condolences for the loss of life caused by Iranian retaliatory strikes.

In a phone call with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Modi urged “de-escalation, regional peace, security and stability,” according to a statement on X. The remarks came after a joint US-Israeli military operation against Iran on Saturday triggered Iranian retaliatory strikes targeting US-linked bases in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE. One Indian national was reported injured in the UAE during the attacks.

Separately, India’s main opposition party, Congress, condemned the “targeted assassination” of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in the US-Israeli strike. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on X that the killing of a sitting head of state “strikes at the heart” of international norms. He added: “No external power has the authority to engineer regime change or dictate the leadership of another state. Such actions amount to imperialism and are fundamentally incompatible with a genuinely rules-based international order,” extending “deepest condolences” to Khamenei’s family and the Iranian people.

Tehran early Sunday confirmed Khamenei’s death at the age of 86 following the US-Israeli bombardment of Tehran on Saturday, declaring 40 days of public mourning.
